Verizon’s New Phone is an iPhone Killer!

posted in Apple (AAPL), iPhone |

Verizon (VZ) just launched what has been dubbed the “iPhone Killer.” Fortunately, Apple has little to worry about.

The new VZ Voyager, which was also created by LG, was first introduced to the public in May of this year. The phone has a “flip-open” QWERTY style keyboard, along with a somewhat large touchscreen face. The phone also has:

  • A Web browser
  • Media player
  • Bluetooth
  • Camera
  • Possibly GPS navigation

The catch? The phone looks like a spruced up Palm Treo and the screen is full of the those tiny icons. Verizon and LG have essentially copied the iPhone screen characteristics by placing wireless information (bluetooth, status, etc.) and battery stats at the top, and including a bottom navigation bar. Without furtherado:

It’s certainly an attempt, but in all honesty, the phone will have a hard time competing with the iPhone, regardless of pricing. The phone is expected to come out some time around Thanksgiving.

The Verizon phones look good, but I think management is crazy to say they will kill the iphone. The Voyager and Venus have the most potential, but the iphone will be just fine. I wrote about this at my blog as well:

Ummmm - why is a comparison to the Treo a negative? I’ve been using a Verizon 700P (Palm OS) with Good Mobile Messaging for several months and am extremely happy with the speed of the network, the Blackberry-like feature set of Good Mobile Messaging and the build quality. The iPhone is cute, but it’s not enterprise ready. I have a small software company and we could never use the iPhone - it’s too basic. We need completely real-time integration with an Exchange server for email & calendaring. Try that with an iPhone…… So, Treo’s are fantastic if you really need robust functionality. If you’re a poseur and need the iPhone for ego stroking, go for it… I can’t wait for the Voyager from LG.
